Work Laptop stopped working? Here are some tips to make it running again!
Laptops have changed our lives making it more advanced and convenient. Unlike Desktops Laptops has its portability and smooth performance. But the only problem with the laptop is the reparability. Desktops are better repairable than Laptops.
Anyways, we all have Laptops at homes but when it comes to business then your company must’ve provided you a laptop too. Imagine a fine day at your work when you come in the morning and try to turn on the laptop but I won’t! what to do next?
Well don’t panic, follow simple steps and get your laptop up and working again before letting your boss know!
IT Guy at the rescue!
Probably the first thing you might also think. Check if your employer has a planning for IT Services. May be an outsourcing IT company or an Annual Maintenance Contract. Most firms have arrangements like that, so check and you can get it fixed without your effort.
Check the power ports
Every Laptop has two power points: The Internal Battery and the charger.
- If you are trying to start your laptop only on battery, then it might be the problem of low battery or a drained battery. Plug your charger in and if it works then start the computer and check the health of your battery in power management.
- Sometimes even the charger could be the problem. Check if the power cord of your charger is going properly in charger adaptor.
- Check for the fuse in the power cord, replace it with the new working one.
If it worked for you then it’s a great news! If it hasn’t then it might be the damaged DC Jack. In other words, when you try to charge your laptop it doesn’t power up but then you wiggle up the charging point and at a certain angle it works! Then it’s a DC jack issue. Get it repaired by a laptop repairing shop.
Follow the Lights
Laptops can have many kinds of problems. Follow the signs your laptop may give you.
- If your AC Power Adaptor is working
- DC jack has an issue
- Is it working on a battery?
- If your battery is working, then check if any lights come up.
- If you can hear fan sound.
- If your laptop turns on but you see lines on the screen or may be blur screen that it might be the screen issue and you might require a laptop screen replacement.
- If you have an external screen, then connect and check if you are getting a display.
If you don’t get an image on connecting the external screen, then there are still few things you can check.
Memory Check
Laptops have parts that can be replaced and upgraded later like RAM. Sometimes a mild drop or shock can cause the RAM to unseat from its place. In this situations, it’s possible that your laptop might not start to avoid further electrical damage.
To check the RAM, you will require a screwdriver, usually, laptops have small Philips screws on the back which is easily removable. In major models, RAM slots are easily accessible on the back, so check the online guide for easy access.
Remove the battery first and try to avoid any kind of static charges. Do the whole process on the desk far from the carpet to avoid electronic damage due to static shock on the board.
The Recovery Disc
Sometimes, your laptop might turn on normal but won’t boot the operating system. It indicates that the problem is with your storage media. Your internal hard drive or if you have a Solid State Drive then it might be failing.
Another reason could be the operating system corruption. Sometimes when some system files get corrupted or infected by viruses then it causes the OS to fail.
In this situation, you can try using the recovery media, if you have a recovery media then boot from recovery and try to restore your PC to a certain working point.
If you don’t have the recovery media, then contact the manufacturer and get it from them and if you are lucky enough with the warranty then you might even get it for free. Plug in the recovery media and select to boot from CD/DVD or USB and follow the instructions.
If Nothing works!
You must have exhausted all the tricks by now if it’s still not working then this is the time where you break the new to your boss!
On a good side, you will get a new laptop for your work. You can always pay a Computer repair service to fix the laptop but if it’s managed by your company then they are the one responsible for the repair.
