6 Reasons Why Your External Hard Drive is Slow
Whenever you are transferring a data from your external hard disk to your laptop or computer if the hard disk drive becomes much slower than earlier, then definitely something wrong happened with your external hard drive.
At this time, many users choose an external hard drive for data backups because data transferring speed is much higher than old data storage such as DVD or CD and it is affordable. But sometimes, an external hard disk may become slow for some issues even though you haven’t hit it or dropped. In this type of scenario what we should do to resolve this issue? The following discussion will help you out with this problem.
1. Disk Defragmentation not done for a long period
Normally, on a mechanical hard disk, all data are stored is scattered parts in different places. So, whenever you want to access one file or document, the hard drive will work to read all its parts, which will take more time. To resolve this problem, we use disk defragmentation, because disk defragmentation is capable to decrease the amount of fragmentation. So, it is advised that you should run disk defragmentation frequently. If you don’t, then your hard disk will run slowly because the drive will have too much fragmentation.
Solution: In this scenario, you should run disk defragmentation immediately. Open My Computer then right click on the drive which you want to defrag and then properties. Then pop dialog box will appear, in that click on tools and hit the defragment now option.
2. Drive should be corrupted or outdated
The external hard disk can work on the computer depending on the PC disk drive. So, if disk driver break downs, like compromised or being outdated, the disk will be incapable to function as before.
Solution: In this type of scenario the fault is in the driver, to fix this problem you should reinstall the disk driver or upgrade it.
3. Lifetime of External hard drive
The most frustrating and scary reason is that your hard drive is about to die. At that time you think that you always take good care of your hard disk. But this is true that all data storage device has its limited lifecycle.
Solution: Hence, you must backup your data into another hard drive because if hard drive fails, you will suffer from the data loss. And if data loss occurs, you have to recover data from an external hard drive.
4. Downloading many files directly to the external hard drive
Most of the users download too many documents and files directly to the external hard drive from the internet. So, if you are downloading so many files in the external hard drive at the same time, you are giving hard work to the drive as well.
Solution: Of course, in such scenario, you should never download the file or document directly to the external hard drive.
5. More than one programs are working with external hard drive
As an example, too many application is working with the external drive when it is connected to your PC, you’re also watching movies from the external hard drive, at the same time you are copying the file from the external hard drive. The external hard disk will slow definitely due to heavy load.
Solution: in this type of case, you should decrease the hard work given to the drive. Press Ctrl, Alt, delete and open “start task manager”. In the taskbar manager, use “End Process” to stop unnecessary software.
6. Not Enough power in USB port to Connect the external hard drive
Do you know? All the device storage have their different operating currents. Yet, the power supplies of your PC USB port are the same. But, some of the external hard drive needs more power than your USB ports.
Solution: In this case, you can purchase a special USB connector, on one end should be connected to the external hard drive and the other end should be connected to the USB port of the PC (laptop).
