How to do Mac Startup Repair?
Do you know what to do whenever Mac is giving a flashing question mark or maybe starts but still fails on desktop screen? This is happening because you might have an issue with a startup partition. Generally, in this type of situation, most of the time user use Disk Utility in order to fix the Mac startup repair, But you cannot perform this action if Mac doesn’t start. In this blog, we will discuss how to get out of this.
The very first step is to troubleshoot, to test and fix the startup partition if your Mac fails to start up normally. This problem is happening, because a startup partition is failing and possibly stopping Mac from starting. Thus, if your Mac doesn’t boot you cannot perform Disk Utility.
To solve this problem you can perform the process as follows
Safe boot in Mac
If your Mac won’t start you can use this method. Because safe mode is a different bootup which makes your Mac do an automatic disk repair and check as it attempts to start.
So, how can we start a Mac in a Safe Mode? To start your Mac in a Safe Mode, press shift button and then press the power button. Safe Mode needs some time, so don’t be panic if desktop does not appear. Because in this process time the OS is checking the registry structure of Mac startup size, and then fix it if required. In this process, it will delete some unusual startup catches. Because maybe start-up catches may also be stopping your Mac to start normally.
If desktop appears in Safe Mode, you can perform Disk Utility. After Disk Utility finishes. You can reboot your Mac as usual.
Note: Safe mode is only for troubleshooting and not for other applications. Because in safe mode most of the Operating system option will not work properly.
Booting from an External device.
You can boot your Mac from an external device which has the bootable system on it or with your OS X installation drive, which also has the Disk Utility tools Or the recovery Hard Drive which is a different partition on your startup drive.
- If you want to boot from the hard drive, reboot your Mac at the same time press and hold the command + R key
- If you want to boot from your OS X installation disk. Insert the drive into the Mac and then reboot and at the same time press and hold the alt key.
If your Mac complete booting, use the First Aid option in Disk utility to repair and verify your hard disk drive.
Single User Mode
Using this startup process, allows you to run command line utilities, like fsck. fsck is used for verifying and repairing the hard disk drives.
Press power button on Mac and at the same time press the command button + S and you can see that your Mac is starting with a different background.
After that type {/sbin/fsck -fy} in the command line, and then press enter. When FSCK will begin you can see the status of the startup disk on display. It will take some time and after completing you can see the message displaying.
If the message appears that (No error were found) then it’s ok. Or if the message appears like (problems were faced and FSCK is trying to fix the issues on the hard disk drive).
So, if you getting the another message, do FSCK again and again till you see the first message. If you completed this attempts more than five or six times and if the result is same, then your hard disk drive may have the serious issue that it’s not recovering properly after FSCK.
